I was introduced to Gracie Jiu Jitsu 3 years ago by my uncle Christopher when he asked me to help him practice. I became addicted to Gracie Jiu Jitsu after several classes and still love it today. Being only 9 stone myself, I feel confident in the knowing that if I had to defend my self against a bigger stronger opponent, I can do so as all the moves rely on use of leverage, timing and technique over brute strength. It is a martial art that takes many years to perfect unlike other martial arts where you can be a black belt in just 1 year. 3 years into my Jiu Jitsu journey and I am still learning and improving. Through Jiu Jitsu, I was introduced to the Gracie diet which has improved my health and quality of life. This is more than just a self defence system, its a way of life.

On two different occasions I have had to use my Jiu Jitsu to deal with aggressive shoplifters at the shop where I work. Each time I was able to effectively take the aggressor down to the ground, establish a controlling position on top and safely put them to sleep using their own clothing to choke them unconscious. The beauty of this is that this is a more civilised way of dealing with an aggressor than just hitting them and causing unnecessary damage.

I have been going to Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu for over six months now, and I feel I have learned a lot in that time! I thought I knew most of the moves when I was taking the kids class, but then Christopher asked me to take private classes and I learnt a lot more. Some of the moves I learnt at first, I never thought I could do, but actually they quite easy, and well broken down. Christopher makes all the moves easier by breaking all of the moves down into small steps.

Jiu-Jitsu has made me feel more confident as a person, because when I first started going, I wasn’t sure weather I was going to enjoy it, because I thought you had to be flexible to be good at Jiu-Jitsu but actually you don’t. Now, I want to try other things out even if at first I don’t think I will be good at it.

Jiu-Jitsu has certainly given Jamie a great deal more confidence day to day, which was a definite plus when she made the move from primary school to secondary last September. Jamie’s new school, Outwood Academy, is much larger and she was put into much bigger classes with students she didn’t know. I feel Jamie coped really well with this change, and how she did so owed a lot to the confidence she has gained from doing Jiu-Jitsu.

Christopher helped by Nicholas, is a good role model and runs his class in such a way that Jamie feels good, even when she is being ask to do something which is difficult or challenging. Jamie always enjoys her class and I feel what she is leaning fun is a great attribute of Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu and Chris’s teaching style.

Leo, my son, who is 6 and a half has been attending Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu on a weekly basis for almost a year now. It has a clear impact on him even at this early stage in his life, he is always excited to go to Chris’s classes and it is impressive to see some of the moves that Leo has learnt and how natural. He is able to carry out these moves even when we are at home play fighting together.

Chris and his team are clearly passionate about what they are teaching, his true commitment to his students not only ensures that they are learning a valuable skill, but that they are enjoying doing so at the same time.

Chris is someone that is clearly looked up to by his students and he is a great role model for the younger generation.

Chris and Nick are talented martial artists and are clearly passionate about Jiu-Jitsu. What sets them apart however is the quality of their teaching, which is excellent and the best that I have come across.

Every lesson is different, delivered clearly and with patience. They take the time to make sure that the moves are understood and not rushed, each lesson I come away with a little bit more and can feel my understanding and level of fitness improving.

I have been a student at Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu for the past few months and every lesson has had new techniques, been informative and also enjoyable. Both Chris and Nick pride themselves on their teaching which is brilliant. They take their time with each new technique, ensuring that it is fully understood.

Jiu-Jitsu teaches you how to defend yourself in the street but it is more than just self defence. It has helped me gain confidence, taught me about diet and also helped with my fitness.

I was introduced to Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu by my fiancee, and decided to take a class or so to support him. After doing a few classes, I have found that I really enjoy this form of martial arts. I love how Jiu-Jitsu allows a petite girl like me the ability to take down a much bigger attacker; its not about strength but leverage. This has made me feel much safer, especially since I live alone and travel so much. So for women I think this is a MUST LEARN!!!

The instructors Christopher and Nicholas are very nice, patient, and well educated. Making me feel very comfortable, as I was very nervous about having male teachers.

Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu has also helped grow my relationship with my fiancee, as we do the couples classes together which is a great way for us to do something together that we both enjoy.

I am very happy with everything I have learned at Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu and plan to be a long time student of theirs. Thank you so much Christopher & Nicholas!

I am very happy to have found such a good Jiu Jitsu school in Chesterfield. Christopher & Nicholas are both very skilled and very patient. They break each technique down into very tiny steps and what seems to be a hugely complicated move becomes suddenly simple. I am a fifty year-old woman and feel very welcome at the Dojo and despite my lack of fitness after a five-year illness have felt nothing but encouragement. I trust them completely.

Leo has been taking private classes with Christopher at Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu for over a year now. Each class brings new challenges and has helped to build Leo’s confidence. Christopher is a amazing teacher and I highly recommend anyone who is serious about self defence to visit their school.

We found Chesterfield Self Defence Jiu-Jitsu and read all about the history on how it came to be in the UK. I was very impressed with the knowledge and passion towards the history of the art. We went along for a chat and small demonstration where Chris involved Dylan straight away and showed us what Dylan would be learning. We also learned about the founder of the particular style, Helio Gracie who himself was smaller than his peers and siblings yet overcome this and even embraced it in developing his techniques. So this seemed perfect for Dylan.

Having now taken part in over 15 lessons, we have seen a marked increase in Dylan’s self confidence. He comes home and shows us the new moves he has learned and is taking real pride in learning something new and exciting. The lessons are fun and not too strict yet they are teaching him real Discipline and Respect.

I can not recommend Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu enough being the only recognised teacher of this specific style in the UK they are already one of a kind.

After Robert decided he wanted to do a Martial Art to help feel more confident, he found Christopher and Chesterfield Jiu-Jitsu on the Internet. We have now had six lessons together and we are amazed at how quickly we are progressing. Neither of us are very big, nor strong, but can appreciate how the principles of leverage rather than strength achieve desired results. We are both in our early 60s, and as Christopher so rightly observed, I am loving a new found ability to throw a man! should I ever seriously need to defend myself, I feel confident that I could do so,and Robert has definitely found new confidence. Thank you Christopher, you and your patience are very much appreciated.

Self Defence/Martial arts school with a BIG difference, very friendly, welcoming instructors and fellow pupils. There is no macho attitude at all within the school which is refreshingly different. The instructors are very patient and have a real passion for what they teach which shines through, all they want is for you to enjoy the class, learn the moves so you feel safe on the street. My wife and two boys come as well and enjoy it as much as I do! Making it a great family pastime.

Ju Jitsu is a great way to learn to defend yourself, get fit, ease the stress of everyday life and have plenty of fun. You will be hard pressed to beat the great atmosphere and teaching techniques at Chesterfield Jiu Jitsu.

Chris and Nick are fantastic instructors making the whole learning experience really enjoyable. There is no pressure at this club and both are always on hand to help to explain in more detail if there is a particular area that you are unsure of. Fellow students at this club are also great people who all want to learn and have fun. I would have no hesitation in recommending this club if you are thinking of taking up martial arts.
